Getting dental crowns can be a laborious and frustrating process; however, CEREC® technology can simplify and speed things up. If you need a dental crown, this revolutionary technology might be just what you’re looking for! If you have never heard of it before, you can use this resource to understand what it is, how it works, and whether you ultimately want to use it.

What is CEREC?

CEREC is a special type of technology that is used to make dental crowns. It uses advanced cameras to create a 3D model of your tooth, which is then used to create an actual crown to fit into it from a piece of ceramic. The technology used to do this is called CAM, or computer-aided manufacturing. Amazingly, all of this happens during a single dental visit.

What are the benefits?

If you have ever had a crown, put in before, you might be familiar with the tedious and time-consuming process. It takes multiple appointments, and you must wear a temporary crown in the interim. For weeks, you risk the crown falling out and causing both pain and complications, including tooth decay and further damage. If your temporary crown falls out at the wrong time, it can also be quite embarrassing! The permanent crown can be made from materials like porcelain, but it can also be made from metal, which doesn’t look natural and can be an issue in people who are allergic to it. Even if the metal is just used in a thin strip on the inside of the crown, as is often the case with traditional crowns, this can still affect its appearance and make it less realistic looking.

CEREC crowns are different. The technology can be employed immediately, and a crown can be milled from a solid ceramic block at the initial visit. This means that you don’t have to wear a temporary crown and run the risk of falling out. Since the crown is made from ceramic, it will match your teeth and look natural in your mouth. This also saves you the hassle of dealing with multiple appointments and can be cheaper since you’re not paying for the temporary crown or a second appointment.

What are the detriments?

One of the biggest problems is simply the lack of availability. Not all dentists will have a machine in their office that can do this, nor will they have the proper training with the machine. Therefore, they must rely on the traditional methods of crown making. You might have to go out of your way to find a dentist capable of doing this.

Can this technology be used in other dental restorative procedures?

The short answer is yes! It can be used to make ceramic veneers. These are used for minor cosmetic dental damage. They are thin pieces of ceramic that are bound to your teeth to cover up cosmetic issues.
