The true cost of avoiding a child’s dental checkup
Amidst the hustle and bustle of each day, the children attend school, have after-school activities their parents drive them to, eat dinner at home and complete homework before bed. The parents spend the day juggling work, house care, driving their children everywhere and supporting the family. Due to this, it can be easy to brush aside a regular dental checkup for a child – a choice that can cost more than some parents realize.
More than just excuses
A family can have difficulty balancing a busy schedule with school, work, after-school activities and more. Due to this, parents may have trouble scheduling a dentist appointment for the family. While it is easy to postpone a dental checkup for a child, it is not recommended.
The amount of possible infections or dental issues a child can develop from improper dental use is significant. The most common being tooth decay. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, states that “About 1 of 5 (20 percent) children aged 5 to 11 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth,” in 2012. The CDC continues that “1 of 7 (13 percent) adolescents aged 12 to 19 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth,” in 2012 as well.
An untreated tooth with an infection will only cause the child pain and spread to other teeth. When the child finally does make an overdue appearance at the dentist, there is a greater chance that an expensive procedure will be necessary. As much as insurance can help, there are times when insurance does not quite cut it.
A steep price to pay
From braces to filling cavities, there are numerous reasons a child will need dental treatment. The American Dental Association, or ADA, compares the cost of general dental procedures versus the restorative services one may require in order to treat infection or tooth decay.
According to the ADA, the average cost of preventative services cost:
- Topical fluoride applications – $31.70 (child), $32.59 (adult)
- Periodontics examination by a general dentist – $44.10
- Prophylaxis (cleaning) – $61.14 (child)
- Sealant application, per teeth – $44.12
These estimates are within the general range of what one will have to pay for each procedure. Insurance can help to lower these costs as well. Certain fillings can cost close to $200 per filling. However, for a root canal procedure, the rates can be upwards of $900. To help avoid this cost, schedule an appointment with a family dentist.
A family dentist can treat the parents and children in one visit, if possible. This way, the parent can bring both kids in one, avoiding the hassle of more than one trip and the chance of infection catching them off guard. If you or your children have not been to the dentist in over six months, consider scheduling an appointment with a family dentist today. You can get the proper care you and your family need at affordable rates.
