Teeth Straightening: Clear Aligners vs. Braces

Invisalign Vs Traditional Braces Davis, CA

When it comes to teeth straightening options, two options are more popular than others – clear aligners and braces. Although these options are effective, work on similar principles, and have their advantages, it is better to seek the dentist’s opinion before deciding. The dental professional will evaluate your situation and discuss the options with you. This article compares clear aligners and braces.

Clear aligners vs. braces

Traditional metal braces are probably the most popular teeth straightening options in the world. Braces comprise brackets bonded to the teeth. An archwire runs through the brackets and holds them together. Braces are usually made from stainless steel and small rubber bands ensure the wires stay fixed to the brackets. The dentist will tighten the archwire to put gentle force that moves the teeth into position gradually.

Clear aligners are thin, transparent trays custom-made for the teeth. In contrast to fixed braces, aligners are removable. The patient will need to wear and remove them according to the dentist’s instructions. The aligners work like braces – induce constant, gentle force on the teeth.

The benefits compared

Aligners offer some additional benefits that are not available with braces. It is easier to clean the teeth since the trays are removable. Also, there is no need to worry about food getting trapped around the brackets.

The brackets and wires of braces can loosen, often necessitating adjustment or repair appointments with the dentist. Patients can avoid this issue with aligners. The major benefit for many is the transparency – clear aligners are barely noticeable on the teeth, unlike braces.

Braces work for impulsive teenagers and adults who may fail to comply with the minimum use time of aligners. It is also often recommended more for severe cases, especially when the jaw also need to be realigned.

The treatment processes

The first stage of getting straighter teeth is booking an appointment with the dentist. Patients will undergo oral exams and x-rays so the dentist can determine the best treatment option.

Patients will need to visit the dentist every four to six weeks to adjust their braces. Teeth straightening with braces takes between one to two years, although the estimate depends mostly on the severity of misalignment.

For aligners, the dentist will provide several sets. Patients will wear each set for about two weeks. The trays need to remain in the mouth for 22 hours per day and only removed when brushing, flossing, or eating. Both braces and clear aligners require wearing a retainer at the end of treatment.

The effectiveness compared

Metal braces are often more practical for teeth alignment that involve overcrowding. Metal braces are fixed permanently to the teeth, so there is no concern about compliance or losing the trays. However, a study discovered that the average treatment duration for aligners was shorter compared to traditional braces. The dental appointments are fewer too.

Final note

If you need to undergo teeth straightening, book an appointment to discuss your options with the dentist. They can help you choose between clear aligners and braces.
